TAMPA - A Hillsborough sheriff's detective fired several shots after he came upon an armed robbery suspect Thursday afternoon.

Neither the 17-year-old suspect nor the detective were injured in the incident, which occurred about 4:18 p.m. at U Name It, a tobacco store at 14833 N Florida Ave.

Detective Craig Darlak was on his way home when he took a detour to the location after being alerted to a silent alarm.

Shortly after he arrived, officials said, a man emerged with a gun pointed at Darlak. Darlak, who has been with the force 17 to 20 years, fired several shots.

The suspect ran through a parking lot and into a nearby neighborhood where he was apprehended by 4:32 p.m., sheriff's spokesman J.D. Calloway said.

Rashad J. Taylor of 8700 N 50th St., Apt. 1302, was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center, where he was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, armed robbery and armed kidnapping.

Deputies recovered a handgun, mask and a hooded sweat shirt they think was used in the robbery.
