Video report
- For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Here's what you have to say
We asked readers and sources how northern Hillsborough has changed in the last 10 years. Here is some of what they said:

"A lot of cars and no roads. I've been here 18 years. You know the old saying, "build it and they will come?' They came, but you need roads to get there."
- Joseph Caetano of Tampa Palms, owns Bostonian Hair Studios and plans to run for City Council in 2007.

"I remember when this all was just cow pasture. Sheldon Road was a two-lane highway. Most of the improvements that have happened in the Citrus Park area I would call improvements. I love having the mall. ... But now, it's getting a little bit crazy.' - Annette Doyle, Fawn Ridge.

"In the last two to three years, we've started to work together regionally and as a community. That, to me, is important. We have the Northwest Recreational Corridor ... and now the new school location really is going to help. We just have to make sure that the parts that are developed are developed responsibly."
- Susan Edgerley of Westchase, president of the Upper Tampa Bay Alliance, which is advocating for an east-west connector road.

"Rush hour starts at 3 o'clock. Every single road in Town 'N Country is bad, but the main roads, Hillsborough, Waters and Memorial, well I wouldn't even get out on them if I didn't have to."
- Fran Gamester, Town 'N Country.

"A number of our retirees, who had a house they paid $60,000 to $80,000 dollars for, they have sold it for a quarter of a million. They've taken their money and their retirement checks and moved to Georgia and the Carolinas because they can't afford to live in Hillsborough anymore."
- Rod Gaudin, owner of Hot Rod's BBQ & Grill in Lutz and three-time candidate for Hillsborough County Commission

"We've transitioned from a community in development to a mature community. CABA (Carrollwood Area Business Association) is continuing to prosper, celebrating its 20th year. CAAN (Carrollwood Area Association of Neighborhoods) is still alive after eight years and continues to be supported by the community. The effort for the new cultural center is going to be completed in a year and there's still a lot of enthusiasm for that."
- Tom Jones, Plantation, president of Carrollwood Area Association of Neighbors.

"I remember when we would talk to commercial interests in the early 90s, there was always that feeling that there weren't enough rooftops. But New Tampa's growth was very rapid. After 1996 is when New Tampa Center with Publix came, along with Muvico, Bennigan's, Ruby Tuesday, Lee Roy Selmon's. I remember we tried to offer Bonefish Grill that spot where MacDill Credit Union is now. A year later, Bonefish was a calling me directly to see if it could move in, but the spot was already taken."
- Frank Margarella, Hunter's Green, commercial real estate broker and president of the New Tampa Community Council.

"Fortunately Lutz hasn't changed as much as some other places ... We now have perhaps more church pews per capita than any other community in Florida ... There are still boots in Lutz, sitting right next to the sneakers, wing tips and deck shoes. We are remaining a diverse independent-minded community as we grow."
- Steve Polzin, president of the Lutz Civic Association

"I don't have to drive very far to get everything I need. Speaking as a senior, all my needs are right here and when Lowe's comes in on Stall Road, I'll be tickled pink. The negatives are too much traffic, and the roads seem to be built after the growth, a little bit too late."
- Nancy Stearns, president of the Northdale Civic Association.
