Former teacher joins the race for School Board

ST. PETERSBURG - A former elementary school teacher has joined the race for a Pinellas County School Board seat.

Minetha L. Morris, 30, will run in District 7, where incumbent Mary Brown has announced she will seek re-election. Jennifer S. Crockett, 33, announced her candidacy for the District 7 seat last month.

Morris of St. Petersburg taught for six years at 74th Street Elementary. She resigned last year to become professional development manager and institute director of TeachPinellas, a program that aims to turn professionals from other fields into teachers.

She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of South Florida and is completing a specialist degree in educational leadership from National-Louis University.

A mother of three, Morris said she is running for the School Board because she wants to be part of the "positive changes" she sees in the district.

"I consider we're on the brink of educational reform," she said. "We need to make sure that everyone - parents, teachers, administrators, students - has a voice in what we're addressing right now."

If elected, Morris said, she will concentrate on issues related to the "controlled choice" plan and on whether the district is treating black and white children alike in areas such as facilities and transportation.

Morris' announcement brings the number of candidates for four open School Board seats to eight. The races are likely to be settled in a primary election, which this year is scheduled for Sept. 5.
