Tonight: USF vs. No.20 Georgetown
By GREG AUMAN
Published March 4, 2006
WHEN/WHERE: 7; Sun Dome, Tampa.
RECORDS: Georgetown 19-7, 10-5 Big East; USF 6-22, 0-15.
COACHES: Georgetown - John Thompson III (38-20, second season; 106-62 overall); USF - Robert McCullum (27-58, third season; 71-103).
NOTABLE: It's the final game for Bulls seniors Solomon Jones and James Holmes, and it's USF's last shot at avoiding a winless first season in the Big East. Jones and Holmes remember how the Bulls ended last season, with two upsets of ranked opponents and a strong run in the Conference USA tournament, and would at least like to end a 17-game losing streak and avoid the worst record in school history (6-22 in 1987-88). The Hoyas won't make that easy, with 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert and 6-foot-9 forward Jeff Green part of a dominant frontcourt. Jones had another double double in Wednesday's loss to Connecticut, but the Bulls let the Huskies take an 18-0 lead and couldn't catch up. If Jones can get 14 rebounds, he'll become just the sixth USF player to average 10 rebounds for a season. Holmes, averaging 16.9 points, leads the Big East in minutes played. The Bulls need next season's leaders, juniors Melvin Buckley, McHugh Mattis and Chris Capko, to chip in.
