McGhee's fate in balance

Compiled from staff and wire reports
Published March 8, 2006

Tampa's Melissa McGhee won over two of the three American Idol judges with her performance of Heart's What About Love on Tuesday's show. But the third, Simon Cowell, continued to be unimpressed, and that was the note on which her fate was left with the viewer voters.

Judge Randy Jackson said McGhee did a good job, and Paula Abdul called her a force to be reckoned with. But Cowell said she messed up and should be ready to go home when the field of eight remaining women is cut to six on Thursday's voting results show.

Times staff writer Sharon Fink and Times wires contributed to this report.
