TAMPA - Detectives are awaiting the Hillsborough medical examiner's analysis of dental records to be sure, but they think the human remains found Monday in a long-submerged Cadillac are those of a man missing for more than 12 years.
Sheriff's office spokeswoman Debbie Carter said investigators found a wallet containing the man's identification while searching the 1987 Cadillac, which was pulled from a pond at Lake Carlton Arms Apartments Monday morning.
A resident of the northwest Hillsborough apartment complex called authorities about 8 a.m. to report what looked like the top of a car floating in a pond.
When a tow truck pulled the white vehicle from the water, it was rusted and covered in algae.
The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office dive team spotted the skeletal remains in the front seat.
Carter said the wallet, along with the tag on the car, led investigators to zero in on the case of a man reported missing Nov. 1, 1993.
The man was last seen leaving a convenience store near the apartment complex after a store clerk refused to sell him alcohol.
Carter said the medical examiner is comparing the dental records of the missing person with those of the skeletal remains.
Sheriff's investigators have not released the missing man's name.
