St. Petersburg High School, 2501 Fifth Ave. N, still has openings for the second session of the Summer Driver Education Camp, from June 12 to June 29. Session one (May 22 to June 8) is full, but names are being taken for a waiting list. All classes start at 7:30 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. The cost is $185, and enrollment is secured by payment to the SPHS bookkeeper. Spaces cannot be reserved over the phone. The deadline for submissions to the 2006 Kids Are Authors competition, sponsored by Scholastic Book Fairs, is March 15. The national book-writing contest is open to student writers in grades K-8 who work in teams of three or more to develop, write and illustrate an original book with the guidance of a teacher or educator serving as a project coordinator.

Entries are judged on originality, content, overall appeal to children, quality of artwork, and compatibility of text and illustrations. One grand prize winner will be selected in both the fiction and nonfiction categories, along with 25 honorable mention awards. ACHIEVERS

St. Petersburg Catholic High School hosted Brain Bowl XXI on Tuesday. Teams of five seventh graders from seven area Catholic grade schools buzzed in to answer questions about geography, science, history and literature. The winning team, St. Paul Catholic School from St. Petersburg, was represented by Devin Dudley, Allie McPhail, Emily DiVito, Ben Brackett and Eric Hendrickson. In second place was St. Jude Cathedral's team of Jo-C Davis, Daniel Joyal, Tatiana Netterfield, Clare Wilkes and Bobby Zeoli. Holy Family took third place with a lineup of Sara Kesneck, Elizabeth Prather, Ryan Rudderham, Melissa Tobin and Jon Walters.
