DADE CITY - Tony Vasquez said Thursday he no longer will coach or teach at Pasco.
Vasquez coached the girls basketball team for six seasons, but was absent Feb. 2 for the Pirates' district semifinal against Nature Coast. He also missed the Sunshine Athletic Conference meeting to vote on all-county players; assistant Tony Webb attended. Vasquez also coached the boys golf team for six seasons. Pasco posted an opening for that job last week. The advertisement runs out today.
Specifics on Vasquez's departure were not made public. "My hands are handcuffed right now," Vasquez said. "All I can say is it's time for me to move on."
Athletic director Jim Ward would not comment on Vasquez's status with Pasco. Vasquez said he is on medical leave and hopes to transfer to Land O'Lakes or River Ridge. He also applied Monday for the River Ridge boys basketball opening.
"My days at Pasco are done," Vasquez said. "I'm pretty much going to resign everything over at Pasco. I'm going to move on and get back into coaching boys. That's my strength. That's where I need to be."
Vasquez took over the girls basketball program in 2000 to replace longtime coach John Edwards. He coached the Pirates to a 93-55 record and two district titles.
