School can't beat bushes for funds

HYDE PARK NORTH - Weary of peddling wrapping paper and cookie dough, Wilson Middle School came up with an out-of-the-ordinary fundraiser: rose bushes.
The school is selling more than 25 varieties of roses and orchids from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the school, 1005 W Swann Ave.
Prize-winning rose exhibitor Fermin Rodriguez will offer tips to nurturing beautiful blooms at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Prices range from $25 to $100. For information, call Jean Adams at 276-5682.
Money raised will go toward a reading program that boosts skills of struggling students with a mix of videos, audio books and paperbacks and new projectors for each classroom.
Students rally tonight to raise playground roofFAIR OAKS/MANHATTAN MANOR - Students and staff members are hosting the Raise the Roof Rally from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at Anderson Elementary School, 3910 W Fair Oaks Ave.
The roof is a cover for the school playground.
Food at the rally includes hot dogs and popcorn. Engraved pavers will be available for $50 today and $75 starting Saturday.
