Expect fewer oranges

Compiled from staff and wire reports
Published March 11, 2006

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Friday reduced the Florida orange forecast by 2.5 percent to 154-million boxes, a drop of nearly 4-million boxes. That comes to nearly a 19 percent decrease from the original October crop forecast. At the same time, the grapefruit forecast was projected to increase by 1-million boxes to 17-million boxes. A combination of dry weather, fruit falling to the ground and smaller oranges all contributed to the reduced orange crop, say industry watchers.
