Theft suspect gets one more charge

By Times Staff Writer

TAMPA - The man who police say was largely responsible for critically injuring a 58-year-old woman Wednesday falsified his identity upon his arrest.

Akeem R. Welch, 21, told police his name was Clifton Devon Jacobs, 25, when they arrested him on numerous charges, including grand theft, leaving the scene of a crash with injury and driving with a revoked license.

Now his charges also include being a "habitual traffic offender."

Police said the incident started when Jacquelyne Sosa saw a man trying to break into her Nissan Maxima outside her home at 6009 Blossom Ave. in central Tampa.

After she called 911, she called her husband, Jaime Sosa, who headed back to the home and saw a car that matched the Toyota Camry described by his wife as the one the would-be thief was driving. He followed.

The chase ended at N Himes Avenue and W Cherry Street when the Toyota collided with a 2005 Toyota sport utility vehicle driven by Arlene Prellezo.

Prellezo, 58, remained in critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital Friday night, a hospital official said.
