Dougherty's no-hitter sparks Tampa sweep

TAMPA - Devlin Dougherty tossed her second no-hitter of the season as Tampa (9-1) defeated Salem International 10-0 in the second game of a softball doubleheader Saturday.

Dougherty hit the first batter she faced in the top of the first, then retired 15 in a row to win the five-inning contest.

In the first game, winning pitcher Niki Trowell went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored as the Spartans cruised 16-0. Her sister, Brandyce, added three hits with one RBI.

UF 8, IOWA STATE 3: The Gators (18-9) snapped the Cyclones' nine-game winning streak with a victory in the Stetson Tournament. Lindsey Cameron led the Gators' 10-hit attack with two doubles. Chamberlain's Melissa Zick had a run batted in. In the second game, Florida lost to Stetson 2-0.

FSU WINS TWO: Sophomore Tiffany McDonald allowed two unearned runs on three hits and struck out eight as Florida State (16-9) defeated Georgia State 5-2 to reach the semifinals of the Silver Bracket at the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee. Earlier, FSU beat Western Illinois 11-6.

SAINT LEO SWEEPS: Katie Heintz picked up two wins as the host Lions (15-7, 2-1 Sunshine State) beat Nova Southeastern 4-3 and 2-0. Kiki von Holt (River Ridge) had a two-run single in the opener. Heintz pitched a two-hitter in the nightcap.

TENNESSEE 8, USF 0: The Bulls (15-13) were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the adidas Tournament in Clearwater.

Baseball

FLORIDA 10, HARVARD 2: Matt Gaski had two hits and two RBIs, and eight other Gators (13-6) batted in runs in a rout of the visiting Crimson.

FSU 6, MARYLAND 2: Tyler Chambliss struck out 15 in a complete game as the host Seminoles improved to 17-1 (2-0 ACC).

MASSACHUSETTS 9, USF 6: Brian Baisley scored twice and drove in two more, but the host Bulls fell to 6-10 on the season.

TAMPA 7, SHIPPENSBURG 2: Orlando Rosales drove in three runs as the Spartans improved to 17-3. Ross Jackson (2-0) got the win.

SAINT LEO 9-5, ASSUMPTION 3-4: Eric Spicer went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs as the host Lions rolled in the first game of a doubleheader, then won the nightcap to improve to 18-5.

FLA. TECH 7-5, ECKERD 5-1: The visiting Tritons remained winless in three Sunshine State Conference games, falling to 4-11 overall.

UCF 15, WAGNER 0: Tim Bascom (Dunedin) allowed just five hits and struck out 12 for the host Golden Knights (8-9).

Other sports

GOLF: USF shot rounds of 300 and 305 and is in sixth place heading into today's final round of the Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville. Gennifer Mendez led the Bulls with rounds of 75 and 74 to tie for 16th place individually. UCF is in 13th place. Host Florida leads with 583, with Mallory Blackwelder tied for first individually at 143. ... Senior Matt Every shot 1-under 71 as Florida moved into a tie with Arizona State for seventh place with a 6-over 294 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championships in Las Vegas.

SWIMMING: Tampa captured five national championships at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis. Chelsea Hastings (200 IM, 200 free), Cole Tedhams (50 free, 100 free) and the men's 200 freestyle relay claimed titles.

TRACK AND FIELD: Florida's men's team placed ninth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., which was won by host Arkansas.
