WAGING PEACE Sunday marks the third anniversary of the beginning of the war in Iraq. With support for the war plummeting in polls, the anniversary will be marked with protests around the world. Locally, the Tampa Bay Rally for Peace will start at 11 a.m. at Joe Chillura Courthouse Square at Morgan Street and E Kennedy Boulevard in downtown Tampa. Speakers include Norma Aviles, mother of Marine Andrew Aviles, the first bay area resident to die in the war. For information, go to www.tampabayvfp.org. GLAMOR ON THE BLOCK Anyone feeling a bit nostalgic for the storied Plaza Hotel in New York, currently undergoing a massive renovation into condos, shops and a much smaller hotel, can buy a piece of it on Wednesday. Christie's will be auctioning everything from a breakfast in bed package china, champagne flutes, Frette table linens, jammies, robes and towels: estimated bid $500 to the silk damask drapes $600 and brass doorknobs (six for $600). To browse, go to www.christies.com. POETRY AND POLITICS In Russia, he has drawn 30,000 people to readings in stadiums. Poet, filmmaker, professor and activist Yevgeny Yevtushenko will be in St. Petersburg this week in a couple of smaller venues. At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, he will read at Studio@620 (see www.thestudioat620.com for ticket information). Yevtushenko, a famously lively speaker, will talk about Russian poetry and no doubt much more at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Eckerd College's Miller Auditorium; the event is free. PLEASE GO AWAY An Ocala judge says he will rule on a plea agreement by Debra Lafave Wednesday. The case against the former Tampa teacher turned tabloid fodder, charged with having sex with a 14-year-old student, was supposed to wrap up last week, but Marion County Circuit Judge Harold Stancil grabbed a few headlines by delaying his decision. BIG GUNS Three giants of American arts celebrate birthdays this week. On Tuesday, composer-producer-music mogul Quincy Jones will turn 73. On Saturday, the brilliant novelist and critic John Updike turns 74, and on Sunday the just-as-brilliant novelist Philip Roth will be 73. - COLETTE BANCROFT, Times staff writer; she can be reached at (727) 893-8435 or bancroft@sptimes.com.
