High court picks new chief justice

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Supreme Court unanimously elected Justice R. Fred Lewis on Wednesday as its 52nd chief justice, a position that rotates among the seven members every two years.

Lewis' term will begin July 1. He will take over from present Chief Justice Barbara Pariente.

Lewis, 58, is a native of Beckley, W.Va. He attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland on an athletic scholarship and graduated from the University of Miami School of Law.
