Briefs: Artwork again to light up downtown landmarks

DOWNTOWN - Lights on Tampa, a program that displays lighted art on downtown Tampa landmarks, debuts its seventh installation at 7 p.m. today outside the Tampa Museum of Art.

The installation is the work of Tampa artist John Whipple, who used the museum's courtyard as a canvas for his 300-foot-long, handpainted mural titled Illuminations of Ruminations. The display will include a video depicting life in Tampa, Long Time No See, which will be projected onto the museum's north wall.

The exhibit will be shown from 7 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through April 15. For information, call Nancy Kipnis at 813 817-6731.

Walk in park with pets benefits homeless animals

PLAZA TERRACE - Bring your four-legged friends to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay's Bark in the Park event Saturday at Al Lopez Park, 4810 N Himes Ave.

The city's Parks and Recreation Department is teaming up with the Humane Society for the annual 1-mile fundraising walk to benefit homeless adoptable animals.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. with complimentary breakfast. The walk begins at 10 followed by pet contests and an arts and crafts event for dogs.

Attendees can sign up as a team or individual walker. Those who collect $45 or more will receive a T-shirt. Collect $100 or more and receive a lunch box, visor and a raffle ticket for the grand prize drawing.

All breeds of dogs and cats are welcome, however, all pets must be at least 6 months old, leashed, current on vaccinations and wearing required license tags.

UT alumni have chance to appear on 'Apprentice'

DOWNTOWN - Calling University of Tampa alumni. NBC's The Apprentice is having a casting day from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the Ferman Conference Room of the Vaughn Center, 200 N Edison Ave.

The event is exclusive to UT graduates. Applicants must complete application, which can be downloaded at www.nbc.com. Click on "The Apprentice" link.

HIV/AIDS update and nursing program facts

DOWNTOWN - The University of Tampa's nursing program is offering a free information session and an HIV/AIDS update workshop from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Plant Hall Grand Salon.

The program will highlight details of UT's master of science degree in nursing concentration, bachelor of science degree in nursing, registered nurse to master's programs and post-master's certificate programs.

The HIV/AIDS update workshop will follow the information session. Participants can earn one contact hour as part of the state requirement for relicensure.

Lupus walkathon kickoff luncheon is Tuesday

NORTH HYDE PARK - The Alliance for Lupus Research is hosting a kickoff luncheon Tuesday at the Valencia Gardens Restaurant for its Florida Suncoast walkathon.

The alliance will discuss plans for the Walk with Us to Cure Lupus May 13 at Al Lopez Park.

The luncheon, at 811 W Kennedy Blvd., is free and open to anyone interested in participating in the event. Money raised from the walk will support lupus research. For information, call 258-5816.

Dress for Success begins annual suit drive today

TAMPA - Starting today, Dress for Success Tampa Bay will host its fifth annual suit drive at International Plaza and Bay Street. The nonprofit organization helps low-income women be "suitably suited" to enter the workforce and has helped thousands of local women get jobs.

Local businesswomen are invited to drop off suits daily through March 24

This year features Celebrity Suit Drives every evening from 5 to 7 in the lower level Grand Court near the concierge desk. Local media professionals will meet and greet: Kristy Knight tonight ; Nancy Alexander on Monday; Jen Holloway on Tuesday; Ashlee Reid on Wednesday; and Times writers Sharon Fink on Thursday and Susan Thurston on March 24.

People are asked to bring new or nearly new two-piece suits, dry-cleaned and on hangers. Everyone who makes a donation will receive a certificate to California Pizza Kitchen, while supplies last, and a discount at Ann Taylor and Furla. For information, call Elizabeth Freid at 221-0030.
