Briefs: City begins repaving part of Ashley Drive

Published March 17, 2006

DOWNTOWN - Motorists may soon experience smoother rides on Ashley Drive. But first, they should expect temporary inconvenience.

City transportation workers began a $250,000 repaving project on Ashley Drive between Interstate 275 and Channelside Drive on Monday. Workers expect to complete the project by the end of the month. Construction will take place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Transportation officials warned that drivers should expect delays.

City officials called the work an "interim step" to preserve the road while the city's transportation staff conducts an 18-month planning study. Planners hope to use the information to figure out how to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment downtown while meeting traffic demands.

Organists to celebrate birthday of Bach

TAMPA - The Tampa chapter of the American Guild of Organists will celebrate the birthday of composer Johann Sebastian Bach at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday with three free concerts at downtown churches.

Concerts will take place at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Madison Street, First Presbyterian Church on Zack Street and Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Florida Avenue. Guests can walk from one venue to another.

This is the seventh consecutive year the guild has held the event, which this year includes the St. Andrew's Choir and string quartet, the Tampa Bay Lutheran Chorale and local organ players.

Parking is available in the St. Andrew's lot or on nearby streets. For information, call (813) 221-2035.
