Parents respond

Twenty schools might be affected by new boundary changes, but the dominant theme of e-mails received by Hillsborough County school officials centered on just one school - Westchase Elementary. Westchase parents have vigorously fought and defeated every attempt to send their children elsewhere. Here's a sample:

"One of the incentives for us to build in this community was that we would have a "community school." Now Westchase Elementary is an A-rated school and loved by every parent in this community. I feel that the residents of Westchase need to remain in WESTCHASE Elementary and not moved to Lowry or Elementary "I" in the future. I think Westchase should be left out of the discussions."

- Lori Sarnese, Westchase

"This e-mail is in SUPPORT of your decision to finally take the necessary steps to ensure that all of the schools in NW Hillsborough County are looked at closely in terms of their boundaries and student levels. Westchase Elementary is not a private school and their residents should not have control over who attends and who does not. Please do not let the backlash from Westchase residents change your mind on this issue for the good of all the children in NW Hillsborough County.

"We moved to Westchase knowing there was a local neighborhood school, and more to the fact, my children are in Kids R Kids Daycare ... and are taken to school and picked up after school by the Daycare. Kids R Kids have already announced that they will not be able to pick up children that are transferred to other schools. What am I to do? I am sitting here almost in tears."

- Sandra V. Hedges, Westchase

"Although this is a challenging and difficult process, I wanted to express my sincere hope that you continue forward with the proposed zoning recommendations. ... While you will be facing many challenging decisions and citizen opposition, I strongly urge you all to continue to make choices that are in the best interest of our children and their education. It is my hope that the educational issues in NW Hillsborough County continue to be a priority for the board as we prepare for state laws to be enforced such as the class size amendment and state concurrency."

- Dea Deming, Dana Shores
