Old Florida gets new codes

By Times Staff Writer
Published March 17, 2006

CLEARWATER - City Council members Thursday night agreed to a series of code and planning changes for a transitional Clearwater Beach neighborhood called Old Florida.

The changes, which passed 3-1, limit building heights to 75 feet for hotels and 65 feet for condominiums in most areas, and set more specific requirements for setbacks, the space in between buildings, and step backs, notches built into buildings to increase view corridors. The changes also require enhanced landscape buffers. The decision ends more than a year of uncertainty surrounding the area, which officials have described as an afterthought during the city's original beach planning process. Council member Hoyt Hamilton could not vote on the amendments because he owned property in the area. Council member Bill Jonson voted against the changes, saying they are not strict enough.
