Steady does it for freshman, East Lake High

Joe May doesn't like roller-coasters. That's for certain.

He doesn't bowl like one either. The 15-year-old freshman at East Lake High entered the Pinellas County High School spring league at a merry-go-round pace, figuring, scheming and expecting to pick the game up.

"I started the season slow," May said after a quick iPod session at Countryside Lanes for the league's last day of bowling.

"I'm an above average bowler but without the roller-coaster scoring. I don't ever really shoot right out of the gate well. I'm not much of a sprinter."

Leading the Eagles to a second-place scratch finish after a 671 on Wednesday, May also led the league's high average the past five weeks with a 205.

May has just one 300, which he bowled when he was 13 at Tarpon Lanes. His mom, Tina, does part-time coaching with Eagles coach Mike Pavlak.

"He likes to make his mom worry sometimes," Tina said. "But he usually turns it up."

May, a powerful righty, also helped Countryside Lanes to this year's Upper Pinellas Junior Bowling Association scratch title along with housemates Kelly Fecke, Chris Ellis and Justin Fecke.

To finish out the season, Countryside High reps Matt Micenec, Matt Florio, Jared Solomon and Jon Brady held onto their 15-point scratch lead, guided by Micenec's week high score of 698.

Tarpon Springs' Andre Bannister, Lauren Galigher and Eric Toliver won the handicapped side, also holding onto a lead.

Good girls games to close out the year came from Ashly Galante, who backed last week's 698 with 649, Allie Edgar with a 607 and Brittany Scanlon with a 564. Jon Brady shot a 671 and tailed May in average with 204.

USBC: Changes to a few items in the USBC Youth awards program have been approved by the USBC Youth Committee to protect youth bowlers' rights and eligibility to participate in high school sports.

As of Aug. 1, members will earn symbolic medals, pins or emblems for their achievements.

"We will continue to recognize each of the accomplishment levels in our current awards program, but to comply with high school and collegiate eligibility requirements the items that we award for this recognition must have a purely symbolic, not intrinsic, value," said Mitch Mitchell, chairman of the USBC Youth Committee, in a recent release.

Among the 341,238 certified youth bowlers last season, 1,428 rolled perfect games in certified competition. Other season totals were 348 youth 800 series, 555 299 games and 232 298 games rolled in certified competition Aug. 1, 2004, through July 31, 2005.

A 2005 study conducted by the NFHS found that nearly 40,000 youths compete on high school teams.

Dexter Bowling and the USBC jointly will honor 10 high school bowlers from across the nation as members of the inaugural Dexter/USBC High School All-America Team.

The All-America team will consist of five boys and five girls chosen annually from eligible nominations starting with the 2005-06 school year.

Selections are based on high school bowling accomplishments, community involvement and academic success. Each team member will receive a $1,000 scholarship and an All-America team award to be presented at the USBC Junior Gold Championships July 8-14 in Fort Lauderdale.

Student-athletes must be nominated by their high school coach or athletic director. Nomination forms are available online in the high school section of bowl.com and must be postmarked by April 1.

For more information, contact the USBC high school department at (800) 514-BOWL, ext. 3179 or visit bowl.com.

PBA: The Tour returns from a one-week hiatus and heads into the final month of the season with the Ace Hardware Championship at Taylor Lanes in Taylor, Mich.

Including this week, just three events remain that count toward the World Point Rankings.

Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) continues to lead with 207,835 points and has wrapped up one of four byes into the Denny's World Championship round of Super 16.

Norm Duke (Clermont), on the strength of his Tour-high six TV appearances, moved into the No. 2 spot with 200,322 points.

Also battling it out for a bye are Wes Malott (Round Rock, Texas) in third with 184,655, Mike Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) with 184,379.17 and Mike DeVaney (Temecula, Calif.) with 175,859. The live ESPN televised finals are Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

Hall of Famer Wayne Webb was awarded the commissioner's exemption for the Ace Championship, which coincides with the DVD release of the documentary A League of Ordinary Gentlemen. The film about the PBA that features Webb, Pete Weber, Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Chris Barnes will be released March21.
