ROBERT KILGORE: 63, retired, Brooksville

By Times Staff Writer
Published March 19, 2006

How did you get started in investing?

That was my profession. I started in 1984, as a financial adviser.

What is your best investment so far?

Harley-Davidson and, more recently, Dunkin' Donuts.

What is your worst investment so far?

Probably AOL, after its last split, before it merged with Time Warner.

What have you learned about investing that you think all investors should know?

You have to be patient with the market.

How would you describe your approach to investing?

Probably conservative, with a moderate amount of risk.

What do you find the most difficult about investing?

Waiting too long to either buy a stock or sell a stock. Basically, it's timing.

How are you invested now?

I have 65 percent in stocks. The rest is split between fixed income and cash.

What changes, if any, have you made in your investments in the past year?

I've lightened up on my cash position and diverted that money into stocks or into fixed income. It didn't pay to put money into bonds that were paying 1 percent.

Do you think now is a good time to invest?

It's always a good time to invest if you know which end of the market to pick on.

What is your biggest money concern?

In the big picture, I think both the federal and the state and the city governments have to control their spending.

Where do you get your investment tips?

CBS MoneyWatch, BusinessWeek. Occasionally, I pick up the Wall Street Journal. I get several publications from various brokerage houses.
