Forms for county mayor petitions approved

By Times Staff Writer
Published March 22, 2006

TAMPA - The group seeking to let voters decide whether they'd like to elect a Hillsborough County mayor can begin collecting signatures to put the issue on the ballot.

Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Buddy Johnson has signed off on the petition forms for the two ballot questions that Taking Back Hillsborough County Political Committee Inc. wants to put to voters. Now the group has to collect a little more than 37,000 signatures from registered voters and has until early August to do it.

Johnson's signoff only approves the forms and does not address the content of the questions. Someone could still challenge the legality of the questions in court, but for now the effort moves forward.

"I am so excited," said Mary Ann Stiles, the lawyer who is leading the drive. "I didn't realize how much hard work it would take just to get here."
