Gov. Bush names a retired colonel drug control chief

Associated Press
Published March 22, 2006

TALLAHASSEE - Retired Army Col. Bill Janes was appointed the state's new drug control director by Gov. Jeb Bush Tuesday.

Janes previously was deputy director of the Florida Office of Drug Control, which coordinates all of the state's programs to reduce drug abuse and its consequences. Before that he was director of the National Terrorism Preparedness Institute at St. Petersburg College.

Drug control officials work with the Legislature and other state agencies striving for a comprehensive, balanced and accountable drug control policy.

Janes replaces James McDonough, also a retired Army colonel, whom Bush has appointed interim secretary of the scandal-marred Department of Corrections.

Janes also has served as executive director of the Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office in the Tampa Bay area.

Janes spent 24 years in the Army. He has undergraduate and graduate degrees in history from Ohio State University and a graduate degree in guidance and counseling from McNeese State University.
