Residents in Ruskin need answers about incorporation
Letters to the Editor
Published March 24, 2006
On March 9, the advocates for the incorporation of Ruskin held a public meeting at Ruskin Elementary School. As a longtime resident of Ruskin, I was looking forward to the meeting. Many of us came thinking we'd be able to ask some questions about this plan to make Ruskin into a city. We heard a lot about the right to vote, but we didn't get to hear much more. Most of us work long days, but we care about the future of Ruskin. We made time to go to the meeting. We made it a priority. And we never got a chance to ask our questions, let alone get them answered. The organizers wanted us to write questions on cards to be handed in. That's just not good enough. Those of us who took time to go to the meeting deserved to have our say. We deserved to be heard. They may have the right to vote, but we are all entitled to real information. When an issue is this important and will have such a long-term effect, all sides must be heard. What the advocates say is, "Put it on the ballot and then we'll talk about it." I think we need to talk about it before it ever gets on the ballot. We need a meeting where both sides can ask questions and get them answered. I want to hear what my neighbors and friends think. I don't want someone to read it off a card. And after we've heard the questions, I want to hear the answers - the real answers, not about how we have a right to vote. If you are going to ask the residents of Ruskin to shoulder the debt of incorporating Ruskin, then there are lots of questions that need to be answered. We're entitled to ask them and have them answered. Pat Council, Ruskin We invite readers to share their opinions.
