Stormwater improvement project now under way SUN BAY SOUTH - Relief from rising stormwater may soon come to neighborhoods south of Gandy Boulevard. Construction on the Paxton Avenue Stormwater Improvement Project started this week. City workers plan to install 1,900 feet of stormwater pipe and inlets on Paxton Avenue from Sixth Street to MacDill Avenue. Workers also will lay pipe south on MacDill to Pearl Avenue and east to Quincy Street, city stormwater officials said. Officials designed the project after homeowners on Paxton Avenue, where six houses flooded during the 2004 hurricane season, complained. The $1.4-million project is expected to interrupt traffic on MacDill Avenue for two weeks during the summer, city officials said. Though welcomed by residents, the work will likely do little to stave off flooding during the coming hurricane season. The city expects to complete the project in December. Still, residents say the project will be worth the wait. "I'll just be glad for it to be done so that I don't have to worry," said Cynthia Hogue, whose house flooded after Hurricane Frances. "Until they get it fixed, we really can't rest." Sales center opens for new condo conversion project BALLAST POINT - Another apartments-to-condominiums conversion became official as the Preserve at South Tampa recently announced the opening of its sales center. The 58 two-bedroom, one-bath units at 5440 S MacDill Ave. start in the mid $150,000s. "This is the hottest up-and-coming area for young people in South Tampa, and the Preserve provides them a rare opportunity for home ownership," Anthony Everett, vice president of Toni Everett Co., said in a press release. The gated community at the corner of Tyson Avenue boasts Baltic brown granite counter tops in kitchens and bathrooms, stainless steel and black appliances, and Berber carpet with the option to upgrade to several types of wood flooring. The sales center is open from noon to 6 p.m. daily. For information, call 837-8700 or go to www.thepreserve atsouthtampa.com.
