Ex-guard gets prison in steroids probe

Associated Press
Published March 24, 2006

JACKSONVILLE - A former Department of Corrections officer was sentenced Thursday to 21/2 years in prison for his role in a prison-based steroids distribution ring.

Marcus Hodges pitched in the Minnesota Twins organization before becoming a guard at Florida State Prison, where he played on the prison softball team. He was indicted in February 2005 along with three other former corrections officers, who are all on probation.

Hodges, 33, was charged with conspiracy to distribute steroids and prescription drugs, and faced up to 20 years in prison. He cooperated with investigators, identifying a former pharmacy technician who supplied him with the drugs, and other charges will be dropped, said his attorney, Tom Edwards.

The steroid charges are part of a state and federal investigation also looking into alleged embezzlement from a state-run recycling facility and misuse of state property and prison labor.
