Alstott has surgery on elbow
By MARC TOPKIN
Published March 26, 2006
ST. PETERSBURG - Bucs fullback Mike Alstott had what he said was minor surgery last week on his left elbow to remove a bone chip.
"Nothing major," Alstott, 32, said. "A little elbow procedure."
Alstott participated in the home run hitting contest March19 at the Legends of Baseball game in Clearwater.
Saturday, when he threw out the first pitch at the Devil Rays-Yankees spring training game, his left arm was heavily bandaged.
Alstott recently re-signed with the Bucs, agreeing to a one-year deal for a reported $1.5-million.
Seahawks exact revenge
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Still smarting from the loss of All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson to the Vikings, the Seahawks struck back Friday by signing receiver Nate Burleson to a seven-year, $49-million offer sheet.
To make it worse for the Vikings, the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press reported the contract contains a "poison pill." The entire $49-million becomes guaranteed if Burleson plays five games in the state of Minnesota in any season.
Because Burleson is a restricted free agent, the Vikings have a week to match the offer or receive Seattle's third-round pick in April's draft. But the clause likely will make it impossible for the Vikings to match.
The Vikings signed Hutchinson to a seven-year, $49-million offer sheet last week.
The Seahawks declined to match Monday because of another poison pill, which required Hutchinson to be the highest paid offensive lineman on the team. Seattle already has Walter Jones making more.
Burleson did his best to remain above the fray.
"I see the resemblance," he said. "But we're two different people with two different contracts."
The Seahawks didn't decline to match the offer sheet to Hutchinson, a transition free agent, until a special master ruled against their appeal of the guarantee clause.
Burleson, asked if he thought his case could end up in front of a special master or arbitrator, said, "I don't anticipate that, but you have to be prepared for anything."
Both teams declined to comment.
NFL EUROPE: Drew Henson went 17-of-24 for 171 yards and a touchdown to lead visiting Duesseldorf past Berlin 22-0. Henson, the former Michigan quarterback and Yankees third base prospect, was allocated to the league by the Cowboys. He threw to seven different receivers. Chris Samp had six catches for 68 yards.
Information from Times wires was used in this report.
