DUNEDIN - A five-run explosion in the fourth inning dug Chad Wittington and Pasco out of a hole and into the winner's bracket on Saturday, the opening day of weeklong play at the Dunedin Spring Classic.
Batting around with five of their total eight hits in the game - they were outhit by a single - the Pirates turned a three-run swing that set Wittington on cruise control from the mound, winning 6-3 over Countryside at the Englebert Complex.
Countryside took a two-run lead after the third inning, scoring one in the second and one in the third, guided by Tyler Staton's first three hitless sides as the Cougar's starting pitcher. Then came the top of the fourth.
Quintin Jones led off with a single, Robbie Shields drew a walk, and Zach Maggard singled Jones around for the start of the comeback. Jamie Cruz sacrificed in a run before back-to-back singles from Stephen Roe and Reyes Perez re-loaded the bases for Julian Juarez who doubled to put Pasco up 5-2.
Countryside added a run in the bottom of the fifth but Wittington stayed until the end for the complete-game win. Jones was 2-for-3 for Pasco.
DUNEDIN 15, WESLEY CHAPEL 3: The young Wildcats - led by an all-junior infield - were no match for the tournament's host, but took the loss on the learning curve. After falling down two runs in the first, Wesley Chapel showed heart with two straight steals for Jason Smith on two straight pitches, after being hit by a pitch in his at-bat.
Josh Lentz, one of two starting seniors, performed the sacrifice fly to bring Smith in. The Wildcats scored two more runs in the fifth inning before the mercy rule ended the game.
ST. PETERSBURG 13, RIVER RIDGE 5: The Knights managed a slight comeback after trailing all game, but came up short against the Green Devils, who had six extra-base hits and scored every inning.
