Do you have insomnia?

A survey conducted in February asked adults a number of questions to determine what percentage of the population suffers from insomnia. Following the questions is the percentage of those answering yes. If you answer yes to at least three of the questions, Dr. James B. Maas says, you need more sleep and may have insomnia. Do you need an alarm clock to wake up at the appropriate time? -- 55 percent said they do. Do you sleep extra on the weekend? -- 49 percent said yes. Do you often fall asleep while . . . -- 44 percent said they often fall asleep while watching TV. -- 31 percent said they often fall asleep in boring meetings, at lectures and in warm rooms. -- 30 percent said they often fall asleep while relaxing after dinner. -- 25 percent said they often fall asleep after heavy meals or low doses of alcohol. Are you tired, irritable or stressed during the week? -- 36 percent said they are. Do you have trouble concentrating or remembering? -- 26 percent said yes. Is it a struggle for you to get out of bed in the morning? -- 30 percent said it is a struggle. Weekday mornings, do you hit the snooze button on your alarm clock several times? -- 21 percent said yes. Do you often need a nap to get through the day? -- 19 percent said yes. Do you often have dark circles under your eyes? -- 13 percent said yes. Do you often feel drowsy while driving? -- 11 percent said yes.
