Audubon Society to offer nature walks and picnic

The Hernando Audubon Society will host the following events in April:

A spring migration birding trip to Fort DeSoto Park in St. Petersburg will be April 7. Participants are to meet for carpooling at 7 a.m. at McDonald's, 31038 Cortez Blvd. (at Interstate 75 interchange), in Ridge Manor West. Bring a bag lunch. For information, call Linda at 754-9436.

Birding and spring wildflower walk, 9 a.m. April 11, Big Pine Tract on Old Crystal River Road, north of Brooksville. This event is co-hosted with Chinsegut Nature Center. For information, call Linda at 754-9436 or Kristin at 754-6722.

Hernando Audubon Society annual picnic at Pine Island will be April 27. A shorebird hike led by Clay Black will begin at 5 p.m., followed by dinner. Those attending should bring a potluck dish to share and their own table service. Meat will be provided. Those with binoculars should bring them.

Military schools, students to meet on Academy Day

U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite invites high school students in the 5th Congressional District to participate in Academy Day, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., April 19 in the Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St.

The event will include representatives of U.S. military service academies and staffers from Brown-Waite's office.

Students interested in attending any of the military service academies can learn what the requirements are to be eligible for congressional appointment.

Enroll in Head Start in Hernando starting Monday

The Mid-Florida Community Services/Head Start Early Childhood Development Preschool Program in Hernando and Sumter counties will accept enrollment applications for the 2006-07 school year starting Monday.

This is a federally funded, income-eligible program for children who will be 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1. Head Start also serves children with special needs and disabilities.

Applications are being accepted from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, or by appointment, at these locations:

Moton Early Intervention Center, 835 School St., Brooksville. Call 754-2464.

Central High School, 14065 Ken Austin Parkway, west of Brooksville. Call 597-6732.

Head Start Hence Street Center, 805 Hence St., Wildwood. Call (352) 748-6677.

Mid-Florida Community Services, 209 N Florida St., Bushnell. Call (352) 793-3114.

To complete an application, parents or guardians must bring these documents: certified birth certificate, immunization record (blue form), proof of guardianship (if applicable) and proof of income, such as current check stub, W-2 form from the prior year, statement of earnings from employer, unemployment verification, notarized statement of earnings for those self-employed or Form 1099.

Perfection to be hot topic at fashion show, dinner

WEEKI WACHEE - Area women are invited to a Spring Fling Fashion Show and Dinner from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 11 at the Heather Golf and Country Club, 7406 St. Andrews Blvd.

Fashions will be presented by Fine Line Boutique. Renee Mathis of Sarasota will provide musical entertainment and discuss "Thinking You are Perfect Doesn't Always Lead to Perfection."

The event is sponsored by the Spring Hill After Five Connection, which is affiliated with Stonecroft Ministries.
