Commission okays PetData contract

BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County Commission on Tuesday approved a three-year contract with PetData, a Texas company that tracks pet licensing and vaccination records.
The company had come under fire for being too aggressive in its pursuit of past-due pet vaccines. With the contract renewal, PetData agreed to temper its efforts to get pet owners to comply, eliminating threats to fine pet owners for not keeping their pets' shots up to date.
Commissioner Jeff Stabins, long the company's strongest critic, said, "I really think we have come up with the best compromise."
Commissioner Rob Schenck voted against renewing the contract. He suggested a one-year renewal so the commission could look for a local contractor next year.
In other business, the commission:
Approved 5-0 a pilot project to translate some county Web sites into foreign languages using a free computer program.
Agreed 5-0 to hold a public hearing on changing the county's water- and wastewater-user fee structure.
