BROOKSVILLE - A new Democratic candidate joined the District 2 County Commission race Tuesday.
Hubert "Wayne" Dukes of Hernando Beach is the fifth candidate to enter the race and the third Democrat. Dukes, 60, will face Ronnie McLean and Rose Rocco, both of Spring Hill, in the Sept. 5 primary election.
Dukes, a Brooksville native, lived in England for 17 years and was a fire chief for the U.S. Defense Department. He returned to Hernando County in 2004.
He is president of the Hernando Beach Property Owners Association and a member of the county's Democratic Executive Committee, he said. He and his wife, Silvia, have two grown children.
Dukes said he wanted to bring "a little more logic" to local government.
"I just feel there's a need for a change," he said.
The seat is held by Nancy Robinson, a Spring Hill Republican. Augustino Peretti, also of Spring Hill, will challenge Robinson in the GOP primary.
The other seat up for grabs is in District 4. Commissioner Robert Schenck planned to vacate the seat in favor of a bid to replace state Rep. Dave Russell. Russell, who cannot run for re-election to the House because of term limits, is running unopposed thus far to replace Schenck on the commission.
