Group seeks hurricane relief items

By Times Staff Writer
Published March 29, 2006

It's been more than six months since hurricanes Katrina and Wilma devastated the Gulf Coast region, but many residents of the hardest hit areas are still living in temporary accommodations.

As part of the recovery effort, His Place Ministries of Monroe, La., is collecting personal care and household items to distribute to families in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and parts of Florida.

Items needed include combs, toothbrushes and other hygiene and personal care items, towels, canned food, bottled water, first aid kits and household items such as bed linens, curtains, pillows and table lamps.

His Place Ministries is a disaster relief center that coordinates the efforts of volunteer teams from across the country that converge on the hurricane-damaged areas to clean up, paint and refurnish houses.

Donated items can be dropped off at the Calvary Church of the Nazarene, 235 Cobblestone Drive, Spring Hill, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For information, call the church at (352) 683-0587 or Tammy Bennett at (727) 808-6722.

Pastor Freddie Lindsey of His Place Ministries will drive to Spring Hill to collect the items in mid April. To reach Pastor Lindsey directly about volunteering or donations, call (251) 362-1289.
