OTTAWA - Scott Gomez scored the only goal of a shootout Tuesday night to give the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 victory over the Senators.
After the teams played to a draw through overtime, it took a controversial goal in the league's new tiebreaker to snap the deadlock. Gomez tried to deke Ray Emery on New Jersey's third shootout try but was stopped as the goaltender slid back into the net. The goal counted after a video review.
Martin Brodeur stopped Daniel Alfredsson to seal the victory.
Dany Heatley scored twice in the third period to set a career high with 42 goals, including the equalizer with 30.5 seconds left in regulation.
Brian Gionta beat Emery to reach the 40-goal mark for the first time and give the Devils a 2-1 lead in the third.
MAPLE LEAFS 3, FLYERS 2: Alexei Ponikarovsky and Alex Steen scored early in the third and Jean-Sebastien Aubin had 28 saves in his second start this season for visiting Toronto. Since being called up from the AHL, Aubin is 2-0, including a 35-save effort in a win over New Jersey on Sunday.
COYOTES 5, PREDATORS 3: Curtis Joseph had 28 saves for host Phoenix to earn his 424th victory. Joseph, 38, in his first start since March21, moved past Hall of Famer Tony Esposito into sole possession of sixth on the league's career wins list.
CANADIENS 2, ISLANDERS 0: Cristobal Huet had 36 saves for his sixth shutout, and rookie Chris Higgins scored for host Montreal. Radek Bonk scored into an empty net for Montreal, which pulled into a tie for sixth with the Devils and idle Lightning for sixth in the Eastern Conference.
AVALANCHE 4, MIGHTY DUCKS 3: Andrew Brunette scored twice in the third and had an assist to lead host Colorado, which snapped Anaheim's six-game winning streak. Brunette's winning goal came with 6:03 left when he deflected a slap shot past Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
BLUE JACKETS 4, SHARKS 1: Rick Nash scored twice for host Columbus, which tied the franchise record for wins in a season at 29. San Jose needed to win to tie Vancouver for eighth place in the West.
WILD 3, OILERS 2: Brian Rolston and Pierre-Marc Bouchard each had a goal and assist in the third as Minnesota rallied for its fourth consecutive victory in Edmonton.
SABRES: Adam Mair was cleared for contact after missing 28 games with a concussion. The center was hurt Jan. 12 in a collision with Phoenix forward Tyson Nash.
