Housing aid plan advances

Associated Press
Published March 29, 2006

TALLAHASSEE - Low-income and middle class Floridians would get a $945-million helping hand to find homes they can afford through legislation that cleared a Senate committee Tuesday.

The Senate Community Affairs Committee approved its own version of a plan (SB 132) that first appeared in the House.

The proposal has gained bipartisan support in part because it does away with a measure that in 2007 will limit money spent on state housing programs at $243-million.

Rep. Mike Davis, R-Naples, the proposal's architect, said lawmakers should put all available $945-million into the state's affordable housing trust fund.

The fund uses revenue from some real estate taxes to support affordable housing programs in Florida. Lawmakers agreed to limit how much money goes into the fund last year, but now say they agree with housing advocates who want them to "scrap the cap."

The plan must still clear several committees in each chamber before reaching the floor.
