  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Bulls do enough to reach first national tourney

By ERIC MUSKATEVC
Published March 31, 2006

Crystal Stutler, a 20-year-old Clearwater native, tallied 1,118 pins for 11th at the Chattanooga sectionals.

It wasn't enough for a berth at the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships but enough to lead USF to its first appearance in the Team Championships April 26-29 in Rockford, Ill.

With Courtney Yeakley, 20, of New Port Richey (1,101) and Alison Jomisko (1,099), USF advanced as one of the top four teams and will join Central Florida's women's team, which won its sectional in Allentown, Pa.

Three UCF bowlers qualified for the individual tournament by finishing in the top four: Stephanie Nation, who opened with a 300, Brigette Harrelson, who took first with a 214 average, and Michelle Caracagente.

The Golden Knights' men's team qualified by finishing second.

In Fort Worth, Texas, only Leslie Rapach qualified for Florida State. She finished fourth with 1,157 pins.

The individual tournament is May 22-23 in Milwaukee.

THE YOUNGEST: Michael Tang became the youngest to bowl a 300 on March11 at the Daly City All Stars Scratch Trios League in Pacifica, Calif. Tang was 10 years, three months, 16 days, three months younger than Josey LaRocco of Louisville, Ky., on Feb.14, 1998.

JUNIOR GOLD: The USBC has announced an additional $25,000 will be in the scholarship funds at the Junior Gold Championships July 8-14 in Fort Lauderdale.

A majority of the funds will go to the 200 athletes who advance to the semifinals but don't make match play. Last year, they earned $100 scholarships, half of what they will get this year.

For the second time in the event's history, it will be a sellout, attracting 1,458 participants. It is the largest youth tournament in the country.

ABT: David Piker of Auburndale won $1,000 at the Pinchasers Midtown Tournament last week, defeating Michael Inman of Lakeland by three pins in the final.

Doug and Stacey Sharkey of Safety Harbor finished fourth and sixth, respectively, to earn a combined $285.

The Amateurs Bowling Tour will be at Royal Lanes this week and Dunedin Lanes May 6-7 with $750 guaranteed for first place. For details, go to tsp.abtbowling.com.

NABI: Club 570 will be at Countryside Lanes on Sunday with a jackpot of $300 and a $428 strike pot. Visit centralflorida.bowlnabi.com or call (863) 667-4779.

PBA: The final standard event of the Tour, the Great Lakes Classic, is this week in Wyoming, Mich. This is the final week for bowlers to secure exemptions for the 2006-07 season. The season wraps up next week with the Dexter Tournament of Champions.

With the top 30 in the World Point Rankings locked in for 2006-07, as many as 10 exemptions are up for grabs.

Last week, Walter Ray Williams, in his seventh attempt, tied Earl Anthony's all-time record with 41 wins. Williams, from Ocala, beat Pete Weber 236-213 in the final of the Denny's World Championship. Williams also earned $100,000 and a four-season Tour exemption.

The final of the Great Lakes Classic is at 1 p.m. Sunday with the winner earning $40,000.

COMING UP: Seminole Lanes will host a three-day seminar conducted by certified coach Fred Borden April 7-9. The seminar starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday and is followed by a welcome party Saturday and Sunday. Each student will receive a Legends bowling ball and shirt.

Borden will discuss equipment analysis, grip analysis, mental game and biomechanics. Instruction will include video analysis, and each student will receive a DVD and workbook.

The seminar costs $399. Reservations can be made at Seminole Lanes or Select Pro Shop, and walk-ins will be accepted. For details, call 395-0412.
