  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

All-Pasco County boys soccer

By STEVE LEE
Published April 2, 2006

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: JOSE MONTELONGO, SO., F, PASCO

No one had more to do with Pasco's deep playoff run than Montelongo. The sophomore striker scored a school-record 44 goals in leading the Pirates to their first state tournament, his final tally coming in a 5-2 Class 4A semifinal loss to Middleburg.

COACH OF THE YEAR: BARRY GRAYLING, PASCO

In three seasons, Grayling has guided Pasco to three district titles, two region semifinals and a state semifinal. The Pirates (24-2-1) set a single-season record for wins with Grayling adjusting his game plans to capitalize on foes' defensive shortcomings.

FIRST TEAM

MATT O'SHAUGHNESSY, JR., F, MITCHELL: Most likely would have had more than a team-high 14 goals had he not played sweeper for half a season.

DAYNE STABILE, SR., F-MF, LAND O'LAKES: The Gators' offensive leader and most valuable player, he became go-to striker to finish with 11 goals and 40 points.

ROBERTO CERVANTES, JR., F-MF, PASCO: As part of the county's top scoring trio, Cervantes had 26 goals and 20 assists to keep opponents from focusing solely on Montelongo.

GARIBALDI ALEJANDRE, SR., MF, PASCO: His 20 goals gave the Pirates three players with at least that amount. He had a goal and an assist in the state semifinal.

RYAN MEMOLI, SR., MF, RIDGEWOOD: Team scoring leader came up big when called upon to shoulder offensive load, finishing with 13 goals and 18 assists.

JON KOSHKO, JR., MF, MITCHELL: Good vision and ballhandling skills, Koshko scored 13 goals and teamed with O'Shaughnessy to give the Mustangs a formidable offensive duo.

CHAD VILLIARD, SR., D, MITCHELL: Despite missing half a season due to a broken ankle, Villiard was a vocal leader and made a difference in the back.

ANTONO CORONA, SR., D, PASCO: The Pirates' sweeper anchored a defense that limited opponents to 34 goals in 27 games.

PHILLIP ROSSI, SR., D, WESLEY CHAPEL: Arguably the most aggressive, meanest defender in the county, Rossi was the Wildcats' leader in back.

ANDREW KIMPLAND, SR., GK, LAND O'LAKES: In his only varsity season as a starter, Kimpland posted solid numbers with a 1.28 goals-against average and seven shutouts.

SEAN DOYLE, SR., UT, RIVER RIDGE: A stalwart defender at the club level, Doyle shuffled from the back to midfield to forward and led the Royal Knights with 11 goals and 29 points.
