TAMPA - Firefighters in Tampa had a busy weekend, as they battled three separate blazes across the city that caused thousands of dollars in damage, officials said.
Just before 7 a.m. on Sunday, Tampa Fire Rescue responded to 1201 Bermuda Blvd. in Palmetto Beach, near the Port of Tampa, where a dock and the remnant of a two-story wooden houseboat were on fire. Crews extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes, but the Tampa Fire Marshal's Office has ruled the fire suspicious. That case remains under investigation and fire officials had not yet determined a damage estimate.
The damage estimate from two other fires on Saturday totaled $158,000, fire officials said.
About 3:20 p.m. Saturday, Tampa Fire Rescue responded to the Garden 20 Terrace Apartments at 8725 Del Rey Court, where smoke was billowing from apartment 3K. The fire marshal said that Kelly Roberts left a stove burner on when she went out and said it caused the fire, which did an estimated $8,000 in damage.
Then Saturday night, about 9:45, firefighters went to a single-story house fire at 3207 N Highland Ave.
No one was home when the blaze started, and officials blamed the fire on faulty wiring. The fire caused about $150,000 in damage there, officials said. One firefighter had to be treated at Tampa General Hospital for heat exhaustion.
