ST. PETERSBURG - Eckerd College officials are trying to determine who spray-painted racial and homophobic epithets on three buildings in the academic quad and Hough Center.
Dean of students James Annarelli said Monday that Siebert Humanities Building and Forrer and Brown halls were defaced sometime early Saturday.
Because most campus events are open to the public, such as Friday's block party, it is not known whether whoever is responsible is an Eckerd student.
The graffiti was cleaned up by Monday morning.
"The graffiti ranged from silly stuff ... juvenile expressions ... to homophobic (expressions) in spray paint," he said. "It's a very very rare occurence. Never in my memory has there been anything like this."
Annarelli sent an e-mail to the Eckerd community asking for help in determining who was responsible.
"Such sentiments have no place in our academic society and stand in contradiction to the values of the Eckerd Campus," he said. "I invite folks to reaffirm those values ... that I think are hallmark of this place.
