Breast cancer facts

By Times Staff
Published April 3, 2006

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, after lung cancer.

The incidence of breast cancer has increased steadily since 1960.

An estimated 211,000 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed this year, and 43,300 patients will likely die.

Fifty percent of breast cancer is found in women older than 65.

A physical self-exam is recommended once a month. Eight out of 10 lumps found in physical exams are benign.

Mammography is recommended yearly after age 40 throughout a woman's life.
