Daily fishing report

Last Thursday we went to a spot in 180 feet in search of gag grouper. We anchored over the structure and the bite was on. The first fish was a 15-pound gag grouper that inhaled a live pinfish before it hit the bottom. The fish we were looking for were there in good numbers, with numerous red and mangrove snapper mixed in. We took gag grouper up to 30 pounds, with quite a few in the 15-20-pound range. The mangrove snapper ranged from 3 to 5 pounds, and the red snapper were released.
To target these bigger fish in deeper water you need good tackle. We were using 6/0 reels loaded with 100-pound main line for the grouper. Other tackle can vary. I prefer at least 100-125pound leader and 9/0 hooks for these fish.
Lead is also key in this depth. It is best to have a variety of leads ranging from 6-10 ounces in case the tide is running hard. Live bait is also key in getting these fish to cooperate. Pinfish, grunts or live Spanish sardines are good, and can be caught on many of the local wrecks and reefs that line our coast.
Finally, before you leave do a final check of the weather, file a float plan with someone you know well and make sure your safety gear is in order.
