Agency suspends jailed spokesman

Associated Press
Published April 6, 2006

WASHINGTON - A Homeland Security Department spokesman was suspended without pay Wednesday as he awaited extradition to Florida, where he faces charges in Polk County of sexually preying on a detective posing as a 14-year-old girl in online conversations.

The arrest of Brian J. Doyle, 55, raised questions about the ability of an agency responsible for safeguarding the country to ensure the security credentials of its own people.

The allegations say Doyle revealed his name and his employer and offered the numbers of his department-issued office and cell phones during the sexual conversations.

Doyle is accused of 23 felony charges related to the conversations.

Press secretary Russ Knocke said the department is cooperating fully with the criminal investigation in Florida
