SR 580 closure could last longer

By AARON SHAROCKMAN
Published April 6, 2006

CLEARWATER - A stretch of State Road 580 could be closed for up to a week, city officials said on Thursday, after workers discovered an expansive hole underneath the road, which is used by an average of 36,500 cars and trucks a day.

Crews inspecting an underground sewer pipe Wednesday night found a chasm beneath SR 580 near the Countryside Mall, east of U.S. 19. City officials believe the 120-foot-long sewer line, which was cracked, caused the void.

"Had we not caught it, the roadway could have eventually collapsed," Clearwater utilities director Andy Neff wrote to senior city administrators in an e-mail.

Crews will work around the clock to replace the cracked pipe, city officials said.

That work, however, could take up to seven days, Neff said.
