Oliver moving into principal's office at Young

By ELISABETH DYER
Published April 7, 2006

BELMONT/JACKSON HEIGHTS - On Monday, Angela Oliver takes the post as principal at Young Middle Magnet School, 1807 E , Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Oliver comes from Hill Middle School, where she was principal since July. Prior to that, she was principal at Progress Village Middle Arts Magnet. She moved here in 1990 from Savannah, Ga., where she was a teacher. She replaces Faychone Durant, who left Young in December.

In her free time, Oliver listens to gospel, jazz and R&B from the '70s and '80s and works around her house. She recently completed her doctorate in organizational leadership. She visited the school last week to meet staff and help with bus duty. "My goal is to reach every child," she said.

Centennial celebration set at Lee Elementary

TAMPA HEIGHTS - One hundred years have passed since local craftsmen built Lee Elementary, the English Colonial style school and its octagonal cupola at 305 E Columbus Drive.

The community is invited to attend Lee's centennial celebration from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today. The staff and students will dedicate three flowering trees donated by CH2M Hill, and students will guide guests on tours and explain the uses of artifacts found on school grounds.

Lee is the second oldest elementary school in Hillsborough County, behind Gorrie in Hyde Park North. Lee became the district's first elementary magnet in 1993 and was renamed Lee Academy of World Studies in 2005.
