DURANT - After a six-run second inning Tuesday, Bloomingdale seemed to be on its way to a mercy-rule victory over Class 6A, No 3-ranked Durant, but the Cougars battled back to make it a close game.
The Cougars fought to within three runs, but could not quite finish up. Bloomingdale took advantage of eight Durant errors to hammer down a 9-6 win.
"I was scared coming in here, because I thought Durant had a good team and they do," Bulls coach Mike Clamon said. "I thought it would be a high-scoring game, but I didn't expect them to make so many errors. I am not complaining though, I will take a win over them any time."
Durant outhit Bloomingdale 10-7, but the errors were the difference.
Bloomingdale scored first in the first, but Durant came back in the bottom of the inning to go out front 2-1. Bulls centerfielder Katelyn Molkenthin scored on an error.
Cari Curfman and Kristen Jones scored the go-ahead runs for the Cougars on a deep single by Kelsey Horton.
Curfman led the Durant offense and certainly did her part to try to help a comeback. She went 4-for-4 at the plate, including a solo blast over the rightfield fence in the bottom of the sixth. She also doubled, recorded three RBIs and scored two runs.
Bloomingdale's big inning was the second.
The first five batters got on base via three hits and a pair of Durant errors. Four of them, Laura Williams, Destani Frey, Aeelyn Abreu and Carly Shepherd, scored. Haley Tanner and Hayley Gerun also scored on a two-RBI single by Samantha Zanoni.
Bloomingdale scored two more runs in the third.
"I would have felt better if our girls had scored more runs after the third inning, but it turns out they didn't need to," Clamon said. "This will help us enter the district tournament next week on the upbeat. I really wasn't sure it would go our way, but I am glad it did."
