Oklahoma tabs Capel

NORMAN, Okla. - Jeff Capel was hired as Oklahoma's basketball coach Tuesday, resigning from Virginia Commonwealth to replace Kelvin Sampson.
"In everything we do we're going to strive to be excellent, in the community, in the classroom and on the court," Capel said at a news conference after being introduced by Sooners athletic director Joe Castiglione.
Capel, 31, was 79-41 in four seasons as coach at VCU. He signed a two-year extension last month.
CALIPARI STAYS: John Calipari will accept a raise and stay at Memphis instead of accepting an offer to coach at N.C. State, the Charlotte Observer reported.
SSC CHAMPIONSHIPS: Eckerd (914) finished fourth, Saint Leo (926) seventh and Tampa (960) last in the nine-team field at the men's Sunshine State Conference tournament at Lake Jovita. Eckerd's Danny Allen was 10th. Saint Leo (1084) was last of seven teams in the women's tournament, led by Angie Sparagowski, who was 25th.
ELSEWHERE: The Florida men finished second at the U.S. Collegiate Championship in Atlanta. The Gators shot 292-867, three strokes behind Clemson, and UF's Matt Every tied for fourth. Florida State (916) was last in the 13-team field. ... The South Florida men were 12th in the 15-team Arkansas State Classic at 916, 21 shots behind winner New Orleans.

DORRANCE CASE: In a 2-1 ruling, a federal appeals court upheld a judge's decision to dismiss a sexual harassment lawsuit against North Carolina women's coach Anson Dorrance.
BASEBALL: Kris Howell's run-scoring double in the eighth led USF past Central Florida 4-3 as the Bulls (15-19) earned their first road win of the season and broke an eight-game losing streak. ... Chris Petrie had three hits and David Cash had a two-run triple as host Florida defeated Bethune-Cookman 8-2. ... Tampa, ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball Division II poll, defeated visiting Saint Leo 13-3 thanks to a six-run seventh.
TENNIS: The Tampa women defeated host Saint Leo 6-3. Sarah Belaidi led four singles winners for UT (7-11).
