BUFFALO, N.Y. - Daniel Briere scored on a breathtaking rush, sealing the Buffalo Sabres' 3-1 win against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night.
Tim Connolly had a goal and assist and Maxim Afinogenov set up two goals for Buffalo (49-24-6), which tied a franchise record for victories set in 1974-75.
Taylor Pyatt also scored and Ryan Miller stopped 27 shots - including 15 in the final period - in helping the playoff-bound Sabres inch closer to securing fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
With three games left, Buffalo moved seven points ahead of idle fifth-place Philadelphia.
The seventh-place Canadiens remain two points ahead of Tampa Bay. Both tams have three games remaining.
