Students win recognition for various academic achievements
Eighty-seven score well on various academic indicators, placing them among the nation's elite.

TAMPA - The names are in for the 2005-2006 National Merit finalists, the National Hispanic Scholars and National Achievement finalists for African-American students. Forty-six students from 12 area high schools were named National Merit finalists (out of 15,000 students recognized nationwide) after earning high scores on a college entrance test during their junior year. About half the students will win scholarships worth $2,500 or earn a college- or corporate-sponsored award. Winners will be announced through June. The students are: William A. McBride from Armwood High School; Jacqueline M. Fenton, Mark D. McShera, Alec G. Schwartz and Bradley M. Whitaker, all from Bloomingdale High; Monika J. Perry and Jean G. Wilson-Stayton from Brandon High; Katrina S. Woltmann of Chamberlain High; Delilah Jewel of Freedom High; and Steven L. Robertson of Gaither High. Others named were: Callan Albritton, Jolene J. Brzezinski, John R. Ciotti, Andrew M. Dix, Nishant P. Garg, Ian C. Grossman, Tiffany S. Lu, Don D. Nguyen, Michael D. Roglitz, Kathleen M. Ryan, Krystal J. Snell, David G. Tombs, Anthony J. Tortorello III, Grayum M. Vickers, Charmi M. Vijapura and Erin G. Williamson, all from Hillsborough High; Sharon M. Chacko, Han Chen, Xinyun Jiang, Cristina D. Jozsi, Esther S. Kim, Caitlin A. Lewis, Katherine D. Morris, Amanda P. Nelson, Rachel C. Park, Timothy M. Pasek and Shannon L. Wolfman, all from King High. Other recipients are: Elizabeth E. Colby, David E. Fernandez, Patrick J. Flanagan, Kyle E. Freise and Parker G. Jordan, all from Plant High; Ryan L. Napier from Plant City High; Jacquelyn E. Sweiger from Riverview High; and Christopher M. Shupe and Brandon D. Smith, from Sickles High. Twelve area African-American students were named National Achievement finalists (out of 1,300 recognized nationwide). They are: Ciara C. Gimblet, Daphne A. Larose, Ashanti I. McBride and Krystal J. Snell, all from Hillsborough High; Oriyomi R. Alimi, Tanesha M. Lindsey and Ariana N. Smith, all from King High; Raena J. Boston of Plant High; Chyijuana V. Cooper of Plant City High; Sydney R. Hodges of Riverview High; Austin M. Bettis of Robinson High; and Kylah E. Sneed of Sickles High. Twenty-nine students were named National Hispanic Scholars. They are: Jemissa E. Santana from Alonso High; Laura E. Burgos and Alberto Luperon of Blake High; Alysia M. Cruz, Matthew C. Huereca and Jason M. Lowe of Bloomingdale High; Mark J. Whitaker of Chamberlain High; Andrew G. Hansen of Freedom High; Nicole M. Campo and Steven L. Robertson of Gaither High; and Tristan R. Casanas, Thaimi Fina, Torrey D. Garcia, Alex J. Otten, Anet Pargas, Abby G. Snyder and Katya Zulaica, all from Hillsborough High. Others named were: Jose D. Aldana, Cristina D. Jozsi, Khris A. Martinez, Carlos A. Morales and Daniel B. Quintas, all from King High; David E. Fernandez, Rachel S. Kahn, Amanda E. Machado, Melissa A. Perez and Alexa R. Rodriguez, all from Plant High; and Kate E. Jimenez and Maria I. Torres from Riverview High.
