  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Forward thinking

An entirely subjective look at the week ahead

SPENDING THE WIDOW'S MITE

With Congress in recess, Katherine Harris will be getting five days of face time with Floridians this week, trying to get her reeling Senate campaign on its feet. Don't look for her in this neck of the woods; she'll be heading for "a rural area between Tampa and Tallahassee," according to her Web site, then to unidentified sites in Central and North Florida.

GREEN DAY

With prices at the pump edging past $3, even people who never gave a flip for Earth Day before might be rethinking energy conservation. Find out about the impact of fossil fuels on the planet and your pocketbook at Earth Day Tampa Bay 2006, free at the Lowry Park Bandshell in Tampa, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Or go to www.earthday.net.

THEY REALLY WANT THIS JOB?

Elections for mayor, city council and other officials take place Saturday in New Orleans. Mayor Ray Nagin, who has had the dreadful task of seeing the city through the storm and its aftermath, faces 22 challengers in the nonpartisan primary, which could result in a runoff. Activist groups have been busing refugees to early voting locations since April 10, but with New Orleans' demographics radically altered by the evacuation, the election results are anybody's guess.

NEWSMAKERS

The winners of the 2006 Pulitzer Prizes will be announced at 3 p.m. today, with coverage of Hurricane Katrina likely to dominate the journalism awards. Probably not writing an acceptance speech this year: former New York Times reporter and Lewis Libby confidant Judith Miller.

WAR OF WORDS

A crew from Comedy Central's The Daily Show was in Tampa a couple of weeks ago to film a segment about the controversy in Westchase over a military wife's "Support Our Troops" sign. It's tentatively scheduled to air at 11 p.m. Wednesday; expect the whole brouhaha to look even more absurd than it really is.

BORN TO THE CAMERA

Three actors who are second-generation show biz babies celebrate birthdays this week. On Tuesday, Hayley Mills daughter of actor John Mills turns 60. On Wednesday, Ashley Judd (top left, daughter of singer Naomi Judd) will be 38, and Kate Hudson (left, actor Goldie Hawn's daughter) turns 27.
