Workshop set on impact of minimum water flows

By TIMES STAFF WRITERS
Published April 19, 2006

BROOKSVILLE - The Southwest Florida Water Management District, Hernando County Utilities Department and the Hernando County Groundwater Guardian Team will host a workshop on minimum flows and levels from 9 a.m. to noon May 3 at the county utilities office, 21030 Cortez Blvd.

Local elected officials, community leaders and others interested are invited to attend. Reservations must be made by Friday. RSVP to Lou Kavouras, toll-free 1-800-423-1476, ext. 4606, or Lou.Kavouras@watermatters.org or to Alys Brockway at 540-4368, ext. 35139, or abrockway@co.hernando.fl.us

The purpose of the workshop is to foster an understanding of how minimum flows and levels are set, which agencies are responsible and what impacts may be expected. A minimum flow and level is the limit at which further water withdrawals will cause significant harm to the water resources and/or environment. The Florida Legislature has mandated that Swiftmud set minimums for lakes, rivers, streams and all first-magnitude springs in the district.

In preparation for the workshop, the Hernando County Groundwater Guardian Team will meet from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hernando County Utilities Department administration building, 21030 Cortez Blvd.

For information, call Alys Brockway at 540-4368, ext. 35139.
