Tampa man accused of soliciting sex from a child

By Staff writer
Published April 19, 2006

CLEARWATER - Investigators have arrested a Tampa man after he came to Clearwater hoping to have sex with a young girl, the Sheriff's Office said today.

Instead, an undercover detective met Matthew L. Montgomery, 33, and took him into custody. Montgomery faces a charge of soliciting a child via the Internet.

The investigation began in February when Montgomery engaged in casual chatroom conversation with someone he believed to be a girl under 16, Sheriff's officials said. The "girl" was actually an undercover detective. The conversation became sexual in nature and he later suggested they meet to have sex.

Montgomery was arrested about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at an undisclosed location in Clearwater.
